Volunteering

Volunteer activities can include collecting food from drives and sorting donated food.
Most volunteers work at the Pantry -  stocking shelves, keeping paperwork orderly and
assisting clients while they make their food selections. A minimum of 6 volunteers are
needed to operate each day that the Food Pantry is open.

Volunteer Opportunities Include the following:

Pantry Helper:
Work with clients as they make their selections. May be required to
bag the client's selections and replenish stock as needed. Requirements: A friendly,
helpful demeanor. Basic training is provided. Knowledge of the Spanish language is a
plus. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM; 1st and 3rd Saturday 9:30
AM until 11:30 AM.

Stock Person: Replenish shelves with food items during normal hours of operation or
on Wednesdays around 11:30 AM when the truck from the Northern Illinois Food Bank
arrives. Requirements: Some light lifting and steering of carts carrying food items. Basic
training is provided.

Desk Attendant: Receive clients as they arrive, locate their files and register first-time
clients. Some verification of personal information is required. Customer service skills
and/or knowledge of the Spanish language are a plus. Basic training is provided.  
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM; 1st and 3rd Saturday 9:30 AM
until 11:30 AM.

Food Sorter: Sort donated food items, prepare for distribution and stock shelves. Basic
training is provided. Attention to detail a plus. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM
until 11:30 AM; 1st and 3rd Saturday 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM.
